Products
How do you choose your products?
At Body Sense, we choose products with your health in mind. We choose personal care products based on several factors, including the Skin Deep Database rating by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), Compact for Safe Cosmetics Signers, company mission, values and integrity, and product ingredients and effectiveness. All of the products we carry receive the best ratings by EWG, a score of "0-2" on a scale of "0-10" where "0" is best. We also look for green business practices including full ingredient disclosure, certified fair trade ingredients, eco-friendly packaging, ingredients sourced from renewable resources, and certified organic ingredients.
Do you offer Fair Trade and fair labor products?
We continually strive to bring you the best products with the best ingredients. Part of this initiative includes offering products produced in socially and environmentally responsible conditions. We are dedicated to working with companies with fair labor practices including fair wages, safe and healthy working environments, and the absence of forced/child labor. Additionally, we also feature many manufacturers who are committed to Fair Trade, which creates equity and partnership in the international trading system. Fair Trade companies go a step further by sourcing their raw materials and ingredients directly from suppliers in developing countries through long-term relationships. This, in turn, empowers and supports the rights of marginalized producers and workers around the world. Fair Trade improves the lives of thousands of farmers, workers, and their families around the world by supporting community development, cultural diversity and identity, and creates sustainable, positive change.
Why should I trust EWG's Skin Deep ratings?
The Environmental Working Group developed their ratings by pairing ingredients in personal care products against 50 definitive toxicity and regulatory databases. It is the largest and most reliable source of its kind available to the public. Because the FDA does not require companies to test their own products for safety, cosmetic companies can put virtually any ingredient into their products thus exposing you and your family to known toxic chemicals. EWG does not endorse any products or brands and is an independent, non-profit organization with a mission to "use the power of information to protect human health and the environment."
Does EWG update or change their ratings?
Yes. In fact, EWG updates the Skin Deep Database based on new information and new research as it becomes available. At Body Sense, we regularly check for rating changes in the products we sell. If a product rating has shifted above our acceptable "0-2" range due to new research findings, the item is removed from our core site and put into Clearance. You can trust that we will provide you with only the best options for your entire family.
What is the Compact for Safe Cosmetics?
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a coalition of nonprofit and environmental organizations with the goal of "eliminating the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, and other health problems." When companies sign the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics", they pledge to make safer products and remove or replace hazardous chemicals with safer alternatives within 3 years. To date, more than 1,000 companies have signed The Compact. At Body Sense, it is our hope that all manufacturers of personal care products will sign and commit to The Compact and currently greater than 95% of the manufacturers we carry are Signers.
I only buy products labeled natural and organic. Doesn't that mean it is safe?
Not necessarily. Those marketing terms won't guarantee anything about a product's actual ingredients. Many products that claim to be natural and organic actually contain petrochemicals and other toxic ingredients. That is why it is important to actually read the ingredient labels and know what to watch out for. We at Body Sense understand that between the demands of work and family, most of us simply do not have the time to do the background research and read ingredient labels. That is why we have taken the work out of buying safer personal care products. We read the ingredient labels and the safety report by EWG so you don't have to.
Do you take product recommendations?
Yes! We are constantly expanding our product offerings and eagerly accept feedback from our loyal customers. Please contact us at
Products@BodySense.com with the company name and products that you would like to see included on our site, and we would be happy to look into it.
Additional Helpful Information
What are parabens?
Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, and benzyl) are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries. These inexpensive compounds are used primarily for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties and are commonly found in mainstream personal care products. However, parabens are increasingly controversial as the evidence of parabens being absorbed through the skin and acting as endocrine disruptors continues to grow. Due to concern over its potential link to breast cancer, more and more companies are being pressured to phase parabens out of their products and use safer and more natural preservatives.
What are phthalates?
Phthalates are plasticizing chemicals that in high doses have been shown to disrupt hormonal activity in rodents. Studies on rodents involving large amounts of phthalates have also been shown to cause damage to the liver and testes and cause birth defects.
What is fragrance and why is it harmful?
Fragrance, also commonly listed as "parfum", is a generic term used in the cosmetics industry that can include a combination of hundreds of synthetic chemical compounds. By law, companies do not have to disclose what is actually in their "fragrance" because it is considered a trade secret. Fragrance can contain allergens, pthalathes, sensitizers, and neurotoxins, which is why it is best avoided. If a product lists fragrance or parfum on the ingredient label, you would not know what is truly in it. Choose to use products that utilize only natural fragrances from essential oils. By shopping at Body Sense, you can be assured that our products only contain essential oil fragrances.
What is the difference between fragrance-free and unscented?
Products labeled unscented may actually contain synthetic fragrances. Many products found at the drugstore are labeled "unscented" but contain masking fragrances to cover up other chemical odors. The only way to determine this is by reading the ingredient labels. Look for products labeled as fragrance-free to be sure you are staying away from unwanted chemical additives for a truly unscented product.
